Flickr

Just exploring Flickr .... love this site.  It is an amazing place for professional and amateur photographers to show their talents.

I wanted to find more images of these underwater statues that I heard about on one of my favorite shows and ta da ... after a few seconds .. I found the artist as well as a bunch of his works on Flickr ....
 




The photographer has been identified as 'enciclopedia de artistas'.  The underwater statues / art installations have been created Jason de Caires Taylor.  I'm assuming he creates these pieces of art on dry land and then places them into the water.  Scuba divers can then explore these underwater treasures.  I believe his works are off the east coast of Mexico (Caribbean Sea).    It is a bit haunting but also pretty darn cool.


In terms of my experience with Flickr .... I will probably use it to share photos with friends and family who are not on facebook.  I normally post my pictures to FB but have become a bit reluctant to do so as some of my family are not FB-ers as well as I'm a bit concerned with FB's privacy policies.  If I were to post pictures to Flickr, I would probably mark them a private as most of my pictures are of me and my kids.  I have used Picasa web albums about three years ago and now I can't remember why I stopped using it .... probably because of the pervasiveness of FB.





 

Week 7: Wikis

Funny that wikis should be the "thing" this week as I just had a need to use one today!  It was purely for personal reasons, not at all professional.  My girlfriends are planning a trip in June and the emails have been flying back in forth between six women in terms of picking a weekend, who can come, who wants to do this, etc. etc.  Keeping track of all the responses is a bit ridiculous .... if only we had a wiki .... maybe next time :)

Podcasting

Been trying to catch-up with all my "Things" to do and feeling a bit behind 8-ball.  Not a big fan of podcasting at the moment perhaps not in the right head-space right now.

YouTube

As part of this week's assignment, we were to find a YouTube video.  Amongst all the craziness that has surfaced via Charlie Sheen and all his so-called 'winning' and 'tiger blood' - found this funny video from Jimmy Fallon .. enjoy :)

Prezi

Just did a quick mock-up presentation in Prezi using some content from a PowerPoint presentation I did yesterday for a Psy 214 class.  Prezi is new to me .... catchy, cutesy title but I'm not yet sold on the depth of the product.  I only used the very basic intro tools so perhaps that is a quick judgement.  I do like the non-linearity (sp?) of Prezi but not sure if it the users can do all that you can do with PP.  I do like that prezi is freely available and appears "more out of the box" than PP.  

Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Just did a quick tour of Google Docs and Spreadsheets.  Funny how I was just talking with a colleague about her experience with using Google Docs for an online class and voila, here it is as this week's topic. 

Many years ago (early 2000's), I was co-writing a paper and my friend and I found a similiar online tool to Google Docs that we used to write and edit a research paper.  Obviously Google Docs was not around at that time but we found this online sharing tool invaluable for our purposes.  The name of that particular tool now escapes my memory but the functionality was the same (although no where as robust) as Google Docs.  Google Docs has so much potential for collaborators, teachers, researchers, students who are working together but who are not physically together.  Plus, because it is online, it is great way to have online access to your important files without having to have access to your computer.

RSS feeds

Just learned about RSS feeds and subscribed to a few ,,,, have seen that little orange symbol on many pages  and knew what it was but never actually did anything about it.  This 23 Things program is opening my eyes to potentially new ways of doing things in my work and personal life.  For ex: instead of sending out emails to my faculty about trials, new services, notifications, etc., should I set-up a blog and encourage them to subscribe to that?  Though not sure how many of my faculty would do this.  Perhaps it is worth a try while still using the old method (email) to push-out information.
