week 12

That "thing" was quick!  It didn't take much time at all to create a Community Walk map.  I created a map of the Starbucks in Saskatoon - important stuff don't you know!?!  I could see how this tool would be useful for businesses, event planners, scavenger hunt extraordinaires, etc. 

A few of my friends on Facebook use FourSquare but honestly I find it quite annoying.  Recently a 'friend' was travelling and her status was updated with her location every few minutes (slight exaggeration) but it was a bit much.  To save myself from any potential de-friending, I will not be using this app.           

Widgets

Widgets, Gadgets, Bears, Oh My!  I like that these tools can be easily embedded into already created web pages (not that I have used any myself to date).  I can see the potential with using a few academic-based ones on newly created LibGuides.   

Social Bookmarking

Hmmm ... not yet sure of Diigo is useful for me at the immediate time.  I understand the functionality of it but don't see a purpose for me.  I could see how it beneficial if/when I do research, esp in a collaborative setting.  I also see the benefit of having your bookmarked sites available from any computer and not simply on your home/office computer.  I also like that not only can you bookmark a site but that you can also highlight, add text/comments, etc.  Much more meaningful way of researching online.

Social Networking and Twitter

This week we learned more about social networking and twitter.  It was a good week as I have lots of experience with Facebook (FB from now on) - a social networking tool but no experience with Twitter.  One of two ain't bad (and now I have Meatloaf's Two of out Three Ain't bad song in my head .... anywhooo).  It was good to learn more about FB and some alternatives.  I was particularly interested in the 100 Things to Watch in 2011 slideshow.  In fact, I thought others too would be interested so I posted the link to my FB status ... what goes around comes around.

Twitter is a different beast .... I know of it but have never seen it in action.  While at a conference a few weeks ago, I heard the presenters talk about how their sessions were being followed on Twitter and they gave out the hash tags ... but this really meant nothing to me at the time.  Now that I've signed-up to Twitter and subscribe/follow a few people ... I can see how it works.  I'm still trying to understand all the Twitter lingo but that will come.  At the moment I am just following favorite celebrities and Canadian politicians (I guess celebrities in their own minds).  Will I Tweet .... not sure ... need to get into it a bit deeper.
